Paris Itinerary Suggestions

There are many things to do in Paris to keep you there for several days. There are also a number of day excursions you can do out of Paris such as the Palace of Versailles, Anzac memorials and battlefields of the Somme, day tour of the Champagne region, Disneyland Paris.

Each day is a stand alone itinerary. Note that some attractions or tours dont operate on certain days so you will need to factor that in.

Seasonality and public holidays also affects operating hours of some attractions.  

Notre Dame, Seine River, Eiffel Tower, Latin Quarter, Musee d'Orsay, Champs Elysee, Arc de Triomphe

Take the Metro to Notre Dame Cathedral, one of the most famous cathedrals in the world and spiritual heart of Paris. Spend an hour looking around the cathedral. Metro Line 4, station – Cite. 

Take a Batobus (hop on hop off ferry) from Notre Dame along the River Seine. Batobus stops at a number of the key sites of Paris including: Musee d’Orsay, Louvre (note closed on Tuesdays), Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysees, St Germain des Pres. 

Batobus departs every 15-30 minutes.

Stay on the Batobus until you reach the Eiffel Tower.Going up the Eiffel Tower is a must do experience at least once. The view across the city is spectacular. There are lifts going up to the first and second levels. The final floor is at 276 metres and only reached by a staircase. Tickets cost 8.00 Euro for an adult to go right to the top. It is worth pre booking online as there are always large queues. Official Eiffel Tower site for ticket booking.  

Get back on the Batobus and cruise to Saint Germain des Pres. This area is often referred to as the Latin Quarter and its narrow streets are full of bars, cafes and interesting shops.  Suggest having lunch in Saint Germain des Pres.

Weather in Paris

After lunch get back on the Batobus and cruise to Musee d’Orsay and pass a couple of hours. The Musee d'Orsay is a museum of mainly French art and sculpture from 1848 to 1915. The works of Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cezanne, Seurat, Gauguin and Van Gogh are on display.

Late night on Thursdays until 9.45pm
last tickets sold at 5pm (9pm Thursdays) and  the museum cleared at 5.30pm (9.15pm Thursdays). Adult admission 8.00 Euro  

From Musee d’Orsay you can take the pedestrian bridge across the Seine and walk through the Jardin des Tuilleres (major public garden) to the Place de la Concorde which is where the Champs Elysees begins.

The Champs Elysee is one of the most famous streets in the world. At one end there is the Seine River and the Jardins de Tuileries and the other is the Arc de Triomphe. Along its length is the who's who of luxury goods brands and its wide footpaths host many elegant cafes.

The Louvre, Cool Neigbourhoods and Shopping

Spend the morning at the Louvre. The Louvre has around 35,000 works of  art on display, from Greek and Roman antiquities to Egyptian objects and Renaissance paintings, the museum covers a vast spectrum of civilisation.  Metro stations: Palais Royale Musee du Louvre, Louvre Rivoli.

Note that the Louvre is closed on Tuesdays and some public holidays.

Otherwise 9.00am - 6.00pm.

The ritzy Faubourg Saint-Honoré district near the Louvre is the home to the big names of Paris design and fashion like Versace, Hermes, and Yves Saint Laurent. Getting there: Metro Concorde, Tuileries (Line 1), Pyramides (Line 7, 14)   

The historic Marais district (right) is best for unique gifts, fine antiques and art and funky fashions. Getting there: Metro Saint-Paul (Line 1) or Hotel de Ville (Line 1, 11).

Boulevard Haussmann is the Paris department store district including  Galeries Lafayette and Printemps.  Get there - Metro Havre-Caumartin (Line 3 or 9), Opera (Lines 3, 7, 8), RER Auber(Line A).

  

Moulin Rouge Dinner and Show  

The Moulin Rouge is the spiritual birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance and a world famous caberet venue in Paris's Montmarte district. The Moulin Rouge (meaning Red Windmill) is major a tourist destination, offering musical dance entertainment for visitors from around the world.

Dinner and show at Moulin Rouge costs between 150 and 180 Euro per person depending onthe menu chosen.

Montmarte, whilst a major tourist area is also somewhat seedy and is a mecca for pickpockets and scammers so keep your wits about you.

Dinner at 7pm and show at 9pm. Dress standard is reasonably high although a jacket and tie is not mandatory.

Palace of Versailles - Full Day

The Palace of Versailles or Chateau de Versailles is just outsite Paris. Versailles was built by King Louis XIV and is one of the largest and most ornate palaces in the world.  Get there on the RER Train (line C) from various points including Notre Dame Cathedral, Eiffel Tower or Musee d'Orsay.

Note that Chateau de Versailles is closed Mondays. Otherwise daily 9.00am – 6.30pm  

Beat the queues and book your entry ticket online.

Disneyland Paris - Full Day  

Make your way to Les Halles Station in central Paris and take the RER Line A to Marne-La-Vallée/Chessy station. The station is literally in front of the main entrance to Disneyland Paris.

Purchase your ticket online before you leave. Cost approx 50 Euro per person. Disneyland Paris is open daily from 10am to 7pm.  

Tip, if you are a family or small group, a private shuttle may be a good option.

Note: One of France’s best outlet shopping centres is located one stop short of Disneyland Paris called Centre Commercial Val D’Europe
