Official visitor information site for Paris

Districts or Arrondissements of Paris

Access

Driving into Paris can be challenging and should be avoided if possible.

Flying to Paris or taking the Eurostar from London is recommended.

Once in Paris, use its excellent public transport system to get around. More information on all of this in the Travel section

What to see and do

Most of Paris's main attractions are its monuments such as the Eiffel Tour, Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame Cathedral or its museums or galleries such as the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay or Pompideu Centre.

Walk the streets, drift down the Seine, sit in cafes, browse shops, visit markets and generally soak up the atmosphere of somewhere very different to home.

Paris Accommodation

Most accommodation Paris is generally of the large chain or small independent hotel variety.

Prices in Paris are generally high and the quality not always the best. Be prepared for tiny showers and elevators and banging your head on low ceilings.

If you are staying a week or so, rental apartments can be a good option in terms of comfort and price.

The accommodation section of this site provides details on a wide range of options and is completely unbaised.

Arriving by train

Paris is also a massive European rail hub with high speed rail connections to other major centres including London and Brussels with the Eurostar and Amsterdam with Thalys. Paris Gare du Nord Station is the main international rail station in Europe. The Paris Metro (underground commuter railway) is connected to Gare du Nord making it easy to get to around.

Arriving by air

Paris is the main air gateway to France with Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to the northeast and Paris Orly Airport to the southeast of the city. If you are coming from a long haul destination such as Australasia, Paris Charles de Gualle (Paris CDG) is the most likely arrival point. Both airports have excellent public transport links.

Arrival information for Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport

If you are travelling reasonably light and in no rush then public transport is a good option. Warning - large bulky suitcases and the Paris Metro during rush hour are not a good combination.

Booking a transfer ahead of time can take a lot of the stress out of arriving in a strange city.

Airport transfers are much cheaper than taxis, but must be booked ahead.
