French (français,) is spoken by around 77 million people as a first language and around 190 million as a second language.

French is descended from the Latin language which was brought by the Romans to France more than 2000 years ago.

As a result it has similarities with other Romance languages; Spanish, Italian, Portugese, Romanian and Catalan.

French Tips:

  • Figure out the 10 or so of the most likely phrases you are going to need then rehearse them like the chorus of a song
  • Learn your Ps and Qs. Being polite can make a huge difference
  • Dont sweat the masculine/feminine thing unless you want to learn the language properly. Most French people will be very forgiving if you are having a go
  • Younger people are more likely to have a better grasp of English than older ones if you need some help
  • You will get a lot of visual cues from signs attached to familiar shops or facilities.
