Visiting a spa is one of the great experiences of France. France has spas to suit every taste and budget.

There are salt water based (Thalasso) therapy style resorts in coastal areas such as Brittany or Provence.

Thermal or mineral (thermes) spas are generally found mountain regions such as the Alps, the Pyrenees or Massif Central. The choice is staggering and prices are surprisingly reasonable.

Most spa resorts are located in popular coastal or alpine areas.

Coastal spas tend to offer the best rates in the winter after the beach crowds disperse.

Alpine spas come into their own in the summer after the ski season has finished.

They usually specialise in some treatment or other.

There are spa resorts specialising in areas such as fitness and weightloss, beauty and pampering, skin conditions, gastro type complaints, arthritis and many more.

Spa resorts in France usually offer all inclusive accommodation, meal and treatment packages.

Most spa towns  may be reached by train which is also a more relaxing way to travel than driving or flying.

Interestingly the only places in France that are allowed to have a casino are spa resort towns. Many of these casinos have an elegant charm from yesteryear.

Many spas are part of golf retreats or vineyards so there is often plenty of other non spa related activities available as well.

Thalasso-line is an French online travel site specialising in spa holidays in France and elsewhere.

Relais Chateaux lists a number around 160 spa hotels .
